Red Bull's Sebastian Vettel produced the quickest lap-time in second practice for the Italian Grand Prix with McLaren beaten to second and third by Ferrari.
German Vettel's time of a minute 22.839 seconds was set with 21 minutes remaining in the 90-minute session,
barely a minute afterFernando Alonso had taken over from Felipe Massa in the sister Ferrari at the top.
In the moments before Alonso's mark was set, Massa touched the grass at Parabolica and careered into the gravel - he only just avoided the barriers as he swerved back on to the tarmac and into the pitlane.
Still, his time was enough for third by the end - with teams performing long stints rather than quick qualifying-style laps in the closing stages - as Lewis Hamilton and Jenson Buttonfinished fourth and fifth.
McLaren did not run the F-Duct on Hamilton's car but did on that of Button - time will tell whether the difference will lead to them stripping both vehicles of the technology for final practice, qualifying and the race.
It was not all good news for Red Bull though, as Mark Webber came to a standstill late on due to a loss of water pressure. He ended in sixth.
Michael Schumacher had an early scare at Parabolica in his Mercedes; he would end the session down in 14th with younger German compatriot and team-mate Nico Rosberg 10th.
The first seriously quick time came after half an hour when Hamilton usurped Button from P1. He stayed there for over half an hour, during which period he suffered front-wing damage to his MP4-25.
Before Webber's woes with 19 minutes left to make use of, Bruno Senna's HRT came to a stop for a remarkable third time near the pitlane exit while Jaime Alguersuari's Toro Rosso also had to be rescued by marshals.
Vettel tried to improve after the chequered flag and ran wide at the Lesmo complex, but escaped damage to his RB6.
Rubens Barrichello, whose morning was ended early, finished a promising seventh after lunch ahead of Robert Kubicaand Nico Hulkenberg.
The Force Indias of Adrian Sutil and Vitantonio Liuzzi were 11th and 12th.
