Rio Ferdinand will reclaim the England captain's armband on Tuesday night when he leads the side out against Montenegro,
according to reports.
Speculation had suggested that Fabio Capello would transfer the captaincy to World Cupstand-in skipper Steven Gerrard on a permanent basis, but Ferdinand has been confirmed as skipper by the Italian.
Last week Ferdinand's place in the starting line-up had been in question owing to the excellent form of Phil Jagielka, but injuries to both Jagielka and John Terry made theManchester United centre-back's selection automatic.
Ferdinand recently lost the captaincy of Manchester United, with Red Devils boss Alex Ferguson preferring Nemanja Vidic in the role given Ferdinand's chronic injury woes.
Ferdinand has appeared in just 44 of United's 105 matches since December 2008.
